Protect Your Home
When most homeowners think of the phrase ‘surge protector,’ they probably picture the outlet strip under their computer desk. Here’s the thing, though: most plugged-in power strips actually do very little to protect your electronics from damage. Plus, a power surge can travel through other, unprotected cords—such as a coaxial cable connected to your modem or TV. Beyond that, some of your home’s most expensive appliances—such as your refrigerator, range, washing machine, and dryer—have no surge protection at all.
The average home today has $10,000+ worth of electronics, devices, appliances, and other equipment. This makes a power surge a potentially expensive event for any home and any homeowner. In response, the National Electric Code (NEC) has updated its guidance to states, builders, and contractors. The new NEC requires builders and contractors to install a whole-home surge protector when building or renovating a home. These requirements have been adopted by our state.
An electrical surge could end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars. These events are often unpredictable and random. The time to protect your home and have us install a whole house surge protector is now. To get started, click the button below and fill out the form. Most homeowners associate power surges with thunderstorms. Here in New Mexico, we’re known for our lightning strikes. When lightning hits a power line, it sends 200,000 amps crashing through wiring.
Power lines can be brought down by wind, snow, or even fire. When they fall, they often send a surge to nearby homes, negatively affecting all appliances and connected electronics.
The appliances in your home that use the most energy—such as your air conditioner, dryer, or fridge—can send small surges throughout your home as they turn off-and-on.
Need a surge protector for your home? Call us. We’ll fill you in on what you need to know, what type of surge protection your home needs, and what our installation process looks like.
Our electricians will hard-wire your surge protector to your home’s electric panel, ensuring that the entire panel is protected in the event of a power surge.
We won’t leave your home until we’re confident that your house’s surge protector is operational and protecting your home. And, of course, we’ll also take the time to answer any of your questions.

No surge protection can completely protect against a direct lightning strike. There are just too many amps involved. However, these are incredibly rare. Far more common are nearby lightning strikes, which hit electrical infrastructure and send a surge to nearby homes. Whole-home surge protectors are effective at blocking these surges, as even basic systems can accommodate 40,000 amps. Remember: lightning is actually not the main cause of surges, and smaller surges are far more common.
Ever since we’ve had electricity in our homes, we’ve lived with power surges. They’re an inherent part of our electric grid. So, why are surge protectors so essential now? What’s changed? Actually, our appliances have! Most of today’s appliances feature circuit boards that used to be exclusively found in computers. These delicate boards allow our ovens, fridges, and air conditioners to run more efficiently and conveniently, but also make them just as vulnerable as computers to power surges.
We recommend having us install a whole-home surge protector that is hard-wired into your electric panel. This helps protect your circuits right from the start. Ideally, you can then supplement this protection with individual circuit surge protectors (power strips) at certain outlets. Whatever surge the whole-home system lets through will be stopped by the circuit protector. If you have questions about this, we’d be happy to advise you on the proper setup.
